Sleep doesn't organise itself into one continuous phase. It unfolds in 90-minute cycles, each composed of four successive stages:

  • N1 — light sleep, the wake-to-sleep transition
  • N2 — deepening light sleep, cardiac and thermal slowdown
  • N3 — deep sleep, delta waves, physical recovery
  • REM sleep — brain recovery, memory consolidation, emotional regulation

A 7.5-hour night contains exactly 5 complete cycles. An 8-hour night interrupted mid-way through the fifth cycle leaves it unfinished — with the disorientation and cognitive fatigue that come with it.

REM sleep: the phase most easily sabotaged

REM sleep is not evenly distributed through the night. It accounts for about 20 to 25 minutes in the first cycles, lengthening progressively to 45 to 60 minutes in the later ones.
