Silk anniversary gifts for your 12th: ideas for your wife, your husband, or both of you
The Journal dims after 9 pm. The moon, bottom right, changes that.
Silk is the traditional 12th anniversary gift. What to give your wife, your husband or both of you, and how to tell real silk from the label.
In short: silk is the traditional 12 year anniversary gift, whether it's for your wife, your husband or the two of you. So the one thing that matters is that it really is silk, and the answer sits on a single line: the fiber content. "Satin" is a weave, not a fiber, and "ice silk" isn't silk. For her, for him or for the two of you, pick something that gets used often, and check the momme piece by piece. Our suggestion if you want a gift that gets used every night: a mulberry silk sleep mask for one of you, or two, one each.
Twelve years in, the anniversary list hands you a refreshingly clear brief: silk. Not a color, not a theme, a material.
The catch is making sure it is silk. The word turns up in product names that contain none: we looked at eight listings sold as "ice silk" (soie glacée) on Amazon.fr, and not one listed silk in its fiber content. Here is where the tradition comes from, how to check real silk in ten seconds, and what to give him, her, or both of you.
Why silk for the 12th anniversary
There is no rulebook, only custom. Linking anniversaries to materials started with the big ones: silver (25 years) and gold (50 years) have been documented in Germanic countries since the 1500s, and in English-speaking countries anniversary gift-giving became more common in the nineteenth century. Year-by-year lists came later; in 1937, the American National Retail Jeweler Association published an expanded one (Wikipedia, "Wedding anniversary").
The lists don't all agree. In the United States, the traditional 12th anniversary gift is silk; the British reference cited by Wikipedia, Pears Cyclopaedia, gives "silk and fine linen". Some American lists pair silk with linen too, and some "modern" lists swap it for pearls or colored gemstones. In France, where we are based, the 12th anniversary is simply called noces de soie, the silk wedding.
Why silk at twelve rather than ten or fifteen? We couldn't find a source that explains it, so we won't make one up.
What counts as real silk
In the European Union, "silk" is a protected fiber name. Regulation (EU) No 1007/2011 on textile labeling defines it as "fibre obtained exclusively from silk-secreting insects" (Annex I, No 4), bans using fiber names to describe other fibers, even as an adjective (Article 5), and requires the fiber content to be visible before purchase, online included (Article 16; full text on EUR-Lex).
In the United States, the FTC's textile rules require labels to give generic fiber names and percentages by weight, and say a fiber trademark must not be used to imply that a product is made entirely of a fiber when it isn't. The FTC's own example: a blouse with 3% polyester can't be labeled "100% silk" (FTC, Threading Your Way Through the Labeling Requirements).
Either way, the takeaway is the same: trust the fiber content line or the sewn-in label, not the product name.
Reading the label: silk, satin, "ice silk"
| What it says | What it means | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| "100% silk", "mulberry silk" | The fiber is silk | Nothing else: that's your answer |
| "Satin" | A weave that gives a smooth, glossy surface. It can be made from silk, polyester or nylon | The fiber content: silk satin, or polyester satin? |
| "Silk satin", "silk twill" | The weave (satin, twill), then the fiber (silk) | That the fiber content says silk |
| "Ice silk" | A trade name for a cool-feeling fabric, not a fiber | The fiber content. Of eight "ice silk" listings we checked on Amazon.fr on September 27, 2026, seven declared polyester or polyamide and the eighth named no fiber at all |
| "Silky", "silk feel" | A feel, not a fiber | The fiber content |
The word "satin" doesn't appear once in the EU regulation: it isn't a fiber, so there's nothing to protect. A seller who calls polyester "satin" isn't lying, they're describing the weave. The line underneath tells you the rest. More on this in our piece on "ice silk" and how to spot real silk.
Momme, the silk weight
Momme measures how heavy a silk fabric is: 1 momme is 4.34 g/m², so 22 momme silk weighs about 95 g/m². A higher number means a denser fabric. Momme says nothing about the fiber if the fiber content is missing: it's a weight, not proof.
- Ask for the momme of each piece. On Amazon.fr on July 30, 2026, we found a bedding set listed as a "25 momme" duvet cover whose two pillowcases were 20 momme. One number for a whole set doesn't tell you about every piece.
- Don't look for one "right" momme. We found no standard that sets the momme for a pillowcase, a scarf or a sheet: compare like with like.

Silk anniversary gift ideas for her, for him, for both of you
Tradition says "silk", not "jewelry" or "a scarf", so anything made of silk fits. The best pick is the one that gets used: something you reach for every day brings the anniversary back more often than something kept in a drawer.
| For | Silk ideas | Check before you buy |
|---|---|---|
| Her | A scarf, a pillowcase, pajamas or a robe, a scrunchie, a sleep mask | The fiber content; for clothing, the care label (hand wash or dry clean) |
| Him | A tie, a pocket square, a scarf, pajamas, a sleep mask | The fiber content: a "satin" tie can be silk or polyester |
| Both of you | A pair of pillowcases, a bedding set, two sleep masks | The momme of each piece, not just the set |
We don't quote prices for these: we don't sell them and haven't surveyed them. You can compare silk pillowcases in our side-by-side of ten silk pillowcases, with sizes, momme, prices and return windows taken from each brand's product page.

For your wife or your husband: a silk sleep mask
Buying silk usually means guessing something: a scarf has to suit her style, a tie has to go with a suit, pajamas need a size. A sleep mask skips all of that. There's no size to guess, no outfit to match, and it gets used every night.
Ours is one size: the elastic strap is wrapped in silk and stretches to fit, with no buckle. It doesn't adjust, so there's no hard fastening pressing into the pillow. It comes in three colors: Nuit, Poudre and Aube.
One customer first gave it to his wife, then bought one for himself. His review, posted on our product page on September 4, 2026 (in French, translated here): "I had no gift idea for my wife and came across this mask, which struck me as a great idea, both beautiful and practical. After a few tries I even bought one for myself, because our bedroom isn't completely dark." (Christophe B.)
For both of you: the Ritual for two
For a wedding anniversary, a gift for two makes sense. The Ritual for two is two masks, one each, for $100 in the US instead of $112 (€86 instead of €96 in Europe). The discount applies automatically in the cart from two masks. Each mask can be a different color, and each comes in its own gift box with its own pouch.
What it actually does: it blocks the light in front of the eyes of whoever wears it. If one of you reads late or gets up early, the other keeps the dark. That's all we promise: a mask is no substitute for a doctor if sleep is a real problem.
Choose two masks and their colors
What's in the box
Every mask arrives ready to give, no wrapping needed:
- the sleep mask, 22 momme mulberry silk on both sides (fiber content: 100% mulberry silk);
- a black and gold gift box;
- a 19 momme mulberry silk pouch to keep it in;
- a silk care card and an evening ritual card.
The silk comes from an OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 certified producer. That label covers harmful substances, not what the fiber is: to know whether something is silk, the fiber content is still what answers. The mask is hand washed in cold water with a gentle, enzyme-free soap: how to wash silk.

FAQ
What is the traditional gift for a 12th anniversary?
Silk. In the United States, silk is the traditional 12th anniversary gift; the British Pears Cyclopaedia gives silk and fine linen, and some modern lists suggest pearls. In France, the 12th anniversary is called the silk wedding, noces de soie.
What is a good silk anniversary gift for him?
A silk tie, pocket square, scarf, pajamas or a silk sleep mask. A sleep mask has no size or style to guess and gets used every night. For a couple, two masks mean each of you has your own.
What should I get my wife for our 12th anniversary?
Something in real silk that she'll use often: a scarf, a pillowcase, pajamas or a robe, or a silk sleep mask. Before you buy, check that the fiber content says silk: "satin" is only a weave.
How can you tell if a gift is real silk?
Read the fiber content line or the sewn-in label, not the product name. "Satin" is only a weave and can be polyester; "silky" and "ice silk" are not fibers. Momme tells you the weight of the silk, not whether it is silk.
