Meilleur masque de sommeil en soie 2026 : 7 modèles comparés

In short: the best silk sleep mask is made of mulberry silk between 19 and 25 momme, with a slim profile, no rigid shell and a flat, wide strap with no hard buckle. We checked seven silk sleep masks sold in France on 18 September 2026, from €15.99 to €56: the cheapest in mulberry silk is Maison de la Soie's (19 momme); the cheapest 22 momme, Silksilky's (€24.95, 365-day returns); the densest, Elen Loré's and Dore & Rose's (23 momme, €49 and €56). Ours, Maison Noctya: 22 momme, 3D shape, case and pouch included, €47.99, 14-day returns. The full table is in the comparison section below.

Silk, cotton, or satin: which material for a sleep mask?

This is the first question to settle. There are three dominant materials on the sleep mask market: natural silk, cotton, and synthetic satin. Each has its advantages — and its limitations.

Three sleep masks laid out flat on cream linen under raking light, the silk returning a continuous gradient where the synthetic satin throws a hard glare
Same light, same angle: it is the way each one returns the light that gives the material away.

Silk vs cotton sleep mask

Cotton is breathable, easy to wash, and often less expensive. But its texture can be slightly rough against skin and lashes. A silk vs cotton sleep mask, side by side, immediately reveals the difference: silk glides where cotton rubs. For sensitive skin or contact lens wearers, that detail matters.

Satin vs silk sleep mask

Satin is often confused with silk. The confusion is understandable: both shine, both seem smooth. But mass-market satin is almost always polyester — a synthetic material that doesn't breathe, can heat up during the night, and lacks the thermoregulating properties of natural silk. For a satin vs silk sleep mask, the choice comes down to durability, long-term comfort, and the actual fabric composition.

Natural mulberry silk — the material used by Maison Noctya — is a living material. It slightly regulates temperature, remains soft through washes, and doesn't generate static electricity.

Sleep mask, eye mask, blindfold: the same object under three names

Before comparing models, a word on vocabulary, because it causes real buying mistakes. The same object is searched for under at least three names, and two of them also mean something else.

  • Sleep mask, night mask — the trade terms. Strict synonyms, no product difference behind them.
  • Eye mask — everyday language, and the ambiguous one. In beauty, "eye mask" usually means a gel or hydrogel patch worn under the eye for twenty minutes. It is not designed to be worn all night and it does not block light.
  • Blindfold, eye shade — describes a shape: a flat strip of fabric with no moulded cups.

Flat band or contoured mask: what the shape changes

The difference is mechanical, not cosmetic. Light almost never comes through the fabric — it comes in at the edges, and above all along the bridge of the nose. A flat band laid against the face leaves a gap on each side of the nose by construction; a mask cut to follow that ridge closes it.

The flat band has a real advantage in return: it puts no weight on the eyelids and creates no pressure point, which matters if you sleep on your front or dislike contact on the eyes. Moulded models leave room in front of the lashes — covered further down in the comparison with 3D masks.

Whatever word you use, three things decide: blackout at the nose, pressure on the eyelids, and the material against the skin. The rest is vocabulary.

Which sleep mask to choose based on your use case?

The right answer depends on what you're actually looking for. Here are the most common profiles.

You sleep in a room with residual light

In this case, blackout is your primary criterion. Look for a mask whose shape moulds to the nose to limit light leaks at the bottom. Flat silk masks, well adjusted, create sufficient darkness for the vast majority of situations. If you need total blackout (night shifts, significant jet lag), a 3D mask with a shell may be more appropriate — but it's less comfortable for side sleeping.

You have sensitive skin or sensitive lashes

Mulberry silk is the logical choice. Its smooth surface doesn't pull at skin, doesn't crease lashes, and leaves no marks. The silk sleep mask is particularly recommended for those who wear lash extensions or whose skin reacts to rough fabrics.

You travel frequently

Criteria: lightness, compactness, comes with its own pouch. A silk sleep mask is naturally compact and doesn't crease like cotton. The included pouch allows you to slip it neatly into a carry-on without collecting dust and lint.

You're looking for a gift

A silk sleep mask delivered with its pouch is the ideal gift: useful, durable, refined. Unlike a candle or treatment, it's used every evening and never runs out. → See our wellness gift ideas for women

Which sleep mask to choose: the criteria to check

Before buying, here's what to look at concretely.

Close-up of the stitched edge of a silk sleep mask and of the fastening on its strap
The edge stitching and the strap fastening: that is where the finishing shows.

Silk density (momme)

Momme is the unit that measures silk density. The higher the number, the denser, heavier, and more durable the silk. Silk between 19 and 25 momme is considered premium for a mask. Below 16 momme, the silk will be too light and lose its texture quickly. The Maison Noctya mask is in 22 momme mulberry silk — a balance between softness, density, and longevity.

The strap

A mask that's too tight creates marks. A mask that's too loose slips during the night. Look for a flat, wide strap, with no hard metal or plastic buckle pressing against your head and no Velcro catching your hair. A silk-covered strap is the softest, especially for side sleepers.

Shape and blackout

At the nose, what stops light is not the shape, flat or domed, but a cut that follows the bridge of the nose (why light gets in at the nose). The cut must be deep enough to cover the eyebrows without pressing on the eyes. A good mask should not touch the eyelids with pressure, even lying down.

Exact composition

Be wary of vague descriptions ("silk-feel", "soft satin", "silk touch"). These terms don't indicate a natural silk composition. True silk is listed as "100% mulberry silk" with its grade (6A is most common for premium masks). If the composition isn't specified, it's often polyester.

Best sleep mask: silk vs 3D mask

The 3D mask — with its rigid shell that creates space between the fabric and the eyes — is often recommended for people who can't tolerate fabric touching their eyelids. It offers total blackout and doesn't disturb eye makeup.

Its limitations: it's bulky, can shift during the night, and is less suited to travel or napping in transit. Its rigid structure isn't compatible with all sleeping positions, particularly on the side.

Silk, on the other hand, is light, flexible, and forgettable. You end up not noticing you're wearing it — which is, ultimately, the best possible sleep mask.

Comparison: seven silk sleep masks, checked on 18 September 2026

A list of criteria is not enough when you are looking for the best silk sleep mask: the actual masks have to sit side by side, ours included. Here are seven masks sold in France, with what each brand states on its own product page, checked on 18 September 2026. Prices are those displayed that day, tax included. We have not tested the other brands' masks: this table compares what they declare, and every line can be verified in one click.

What the table says, use by use

  • Cheapest genuine mulberry silk: Maison de la Soie, €15.99. It is 19 momme and a classic shape, not a 3D mask, but the composition is detailed and the origin is stated.
  • Cheapest 22 momme: Silksilky, €24.95, in 3D, with the longest returns window in the table, 365 days. The page is in English and the brand is not French.
  • Densest: Elen Loré and Dore & Rose, 23 momme. They are also the two most expensive, €49 and €56. Going from 22 to 23 momme is about 4% more silk by weight.
  • Between €39 and €40, three masks sit together: Emily's Pillow at 19 momme with an ergonomic shape, Eversilk at 22 momme 3D with 60-day returns, and ours at 22 momme 3D. At the same price, the difference comes down to what ships with the mask and to after-sales.
  • Where Maison Noctya stands, honestly: 22 momme, 3D shape, a case and a silk pouch included, free delivery in France within 24 to 48 hours. Its weak point in this table is plain: 14 days for returns, the shortest window of the seven, with return shipping at your expense. If being able to return for a long time matters more to you than what arrives in the box, Silksilky, Dore & Rose and Eversilk do better.

Silk, cotton or satin: the detailed comparison

First: satin is not a material

This is a confusion that costs buyers dearly. Satin is a weave type — a textile construction, not a fibre. Which changes everything:

  • Silk satin: satin weave + mulberry silk threads = soft, breathable, thermoregulating
  • Polyester satin: satin weave + synthetic threads = shiny, hot, irritating over time

Both have the same shiny surface appearance. Their properties are opposites. A "satin" mask sold under $15 is polyester. A 22 momme silk satin mask is a different product in every dimension — material, lifespan, thermal behaviour.

The objective comparison: silk, cotton, synthetic satin

Thermoregulation: the real difference at 3am

Silk's thermoregulation is natural: it adapts to the warmth of your skin instead of imposing its own temperature. Cotton absorbs moisture but doesn't regulate heat. Synthetic satin traps heat — that's why you wake up with a warm mask and face marks after a full night.

This thermoregulating property is directly linked to the protein structure of mulberry silk and the fabric's density. The same fibre has been regulating for centuries in both hot and cold climates.

Cotton: an honest alternative with a real advantage

Cotton has one genuine advantage: care. Machine wash, delicate cycle, no special attention. If you have non-sensitive skin and don't feel a difference to the touch, a good-density cotton mask does its job. It doesn't regulate temperature, catches skin slightly more, and generates a little static — but nothing deal-breaking for everyone.

What you won't find elsewhere: silk's weak point

Silk requires attention. Hand wash or machine on 86°F in a mesh bag, gentle soap, no spin dryer. The full care guide is here. If those extra 2 minutes per week represent real friction in your routine, cotton is better suited to your life. Silk rewards those who care for it — lasting 5 to 10 years versus 2 to 3 for cotton.

Our verdict

For a fabric touching your face 8 hours a night, 365 nights a year, material isn't a cosmetic detail. 22 momme mulberry silk wins on every criterion that matters during sleep. Cotton is a reasonable alternative for those who prioritise care simplicity. Synthetic satin isn't an alternative — it's a visual imitation without the properties.

Silk or satin for a pillowcase?

The question comes up even more often on pillowcases than on masks, because that is where the two words collide most.

A silk satin pillowcase is a silk pillowcase: "satin" describes the weave, "silk" describes the fibre. A pillowcase sold simply as "satin", with no further detail, tells you nothing about the material — it may be polyester or silk. That single distinction drives price, thermal behaviour and lifespan.

EU Regulation 1007/2011 lets you check this yourself: the word "satin" never appears in it, while "silk" is listed as a reserved fibre name. The same text requires the composition to be visible before purchase, including online.

Now the honest part, which silk marketing tends to skip: on friction alone, a polyester satin is smooth too. It reduces hair abrasion compared with rough cotton. If your only goal is fewer frizzes, you will get part of the result cheaply.

The difference lies elsewhere — in moisture and heat. Silk has a moisture regain of around 11%, while synthetic fibres are designed not to absorb. Over seven to eight hours, a pillowcase that evacuates nothing keeps heat and perspiration against the cheek. That is the clammy feeling on waking, and it is also what feeds the yellow marks on the pillowcase itself.

Where to buy a quality silk sleep mask?

The market is saturated with masks that present themselves as "silk" without actually being so. To ensure you're buying a genuine silk sleep mask, a few reference points:

  • Composition is clearly indicated (100% mulberry silk, grade and momme specified)
  • Care is specific to silk (hand wash, cold water, dry flat)
  • The brand explains its material — not just its packaging

Pharmacy, shop or online?

One useful clarification before comparing outlets: on the shelf, the sleep mask almost always sits next to the gel eye mask, and the two get confused. A gel mask is a compress to chill or warm, meant for under-eye puffiness or headaches, over short periods. It is not designed to be worn all night, and it does not block light the same way. If your goal is to sleep in the dark, that is not the product.

The one real advantage of a physical shop is trying it on: in thirty seconds you check the fit on the bridge of the nose and the tension of the strap, two things no product page can guarantee. Online, you get the information packaging rarely gives — detailed composition, fabric weight, care instructions.

Wherever you buy, the three checks are the same: composition as a percentage, weight in momme if the product presents itself as silk, and blackout tested at the nose, not only in the centre of the mask.

Frequently asked questions

Is the best sleep mask necessarily silk?

Not necessarily — but natural mulberry silk offers the best ratio of softness / durability / thermal comfort for daily use. Cotton is an honest alternative for budget-conscious buyers. Synthetic satin is best avoided if you're looking for lasting comfort. To check that a mask really is silk, see how to recognise real silk.

What's the difference between mulberry silk and wild silk?

Mulberry silk (produced by the Bombyx mori silkworm) is smoother, more uniform, and softer than wild silk (Tussah), which is rougher and less suited to direct contact with facial skin. For a sleep mask, mulberry silk is the best choice.

Does a silk sleep mask withstand washing?

Yes, if properly cared for. 22 momme mulberry silk is washed by hand, in lukewarm water (30°C at most), with a mild, enzyme-free detergent. It retains its softness for several years if care instructions are followed. → Complete guide: how to wash silk without damaging it

Which momme for a silk sleep mask?

In our comparison, the seven masks range from 19 to 23 momme, and 22 is the most common weight (three out of seven). No standard sets an ideal momme for a mask: the figure is a weight (22 momme = 95 g/m²), not a guarantee of quality on its own. A silk mask that states no momme at all simply leaves you no way to compare.

Silk or cotton sleep mask: which lasts longer?

With equal care, silk holds its look and softness longer — provided it is washed properly, since it loses up to 20% of its strength when wet, so no wringing and no rubbing, and dry it flat. Cotton forgives washing mistakes more easily but loses its hand and its shape faster with repeated skin contact. The real driver of lifespan is not the material, it is how you wash it.

Does a silk sleep mask slip during the night?

Silk is a smooth surface, so a silk sleep mask holds by its strap, not by the grip of the fabric. The tension is what counts: firm enough to stay put when you change position, soft enough not to mark the temples. A flat, wide strap holds better than a thin elastic, and it does not dig into the hair. → Why a mask slips when you sleep on your side

Can you become dependent on a sleep mask?

Not in the sense of a dependency. A mask acts only on the light reaching your eyes; it changes nothing in the body, and we found no study describing any withdrawal effect when people stop. What can set in is a habit of comfort, as with a favourite pillow. If you want to stay able to sleep without it, keep it for the nights when light really wakes you: summer, when it gets light before you wake and the windows are open, travel, or a street lamp outside.

Does a 3D sleep mask reduce puffy eyes in the morning?

Nothing shows it does: we found no study on the question. Morning puffiness comes mostly from fluid settling around the eyes while you lie flat, and it increases with age and with allergies; sleeping with your head slightly raised is the usual advice. What a contoured cup really changes is that it does not press on the eyelids or lashes, which matters with mascara or lash extensions. If you sleep on your front, any mask ends up wedged between your face and the pillow: a rigid cup becomes a pressure point, a soft dome gives way. → Sleeping on your side with a sleep mask

Can you wear a sleep mask with eyelash extensions?

Yes, if the mask does not touch your lashes. Choose a domed or contoured model: a flat mask, tightened so it stays on, crushes your lashes all night. To check, open your eyes under the mask: your lashes should not brush the fabric.

Does a silk mask wear out from rubbing against the pillow?

Yes, like any fabric: the outer face, the one that rubs against the pillowcase, ages first. Three things slow the wear. A smooth pillowcase, silk or satin, which reduces friction. Gentle washing, because silk loses up to 20% of its strength when wet: by hand, without rubbing or wringing, then dried flat in the shade, since light, even without UV, weakens it. And a dense fabric: at 22 momme there are 95 g of silk per square metre, against 82 g at 19 momme, although momme alone does not tell you everything about how a silk will last.

How often should you wash a silk sleep mask?

It is a trade-off rather than a rule. Too often, and you multiply the moments when silk is at its most fragile, wet; too rarely, and sweat and sebum oxidise on the fibre, which yellows and weakens it. The usual benchmark is weekly, as for a pillowcase, more often if you wear a night cream or your nights are warm. → How to wash a silk sleep mask
