What we’ll publish on release day

We don’t post a figure until it’s settled. On release day, this page will state:

  • The dimensions
  • The weight of the silk, in momme
  • The fiber content, exactly as it will appear on the label
  • The closure
  • The price
  • How to care for it

EU textile law requires a product’s fiber content to be clearly visible before purchase, including online (Regulation 1007/2011, Article 16). Ours will be posted here before any sale.

Silk pillowcase for hair and skin: what it changes, and what it doesn’t

Your face and hair spend seven to eight hours a night against your pillowcase. Silk glides where cotton catches, which helps limit friction, and it soaks up less of your night cream, so more of it stays on your skin.

For hair, less friction can mean less frizz and less breakage by morning. A 2026 review written for dermatologists recommends silk pillowcases and silk scarves at night for afro-textured hair, based on reviews and practice guides rather than a trial comparing silk with cotton.

Silk also takes up about 11% of its weight in moisture without feeling damp, and feels cool to the touch.

What it won’t do:

  • Erase wrinkles. We found no published study on silk pillowcases and wrinkles.
  • Treat a skin condition. In the CLOTHES trial (PLoS Medicine, 2017), silk clothing added no significant benefit to standard care for 300 children with eczema.

Nor will it keep dust mites or allergies away: the claim is everywhere, but we found no peer-reviewed study behind it. The details, with sources: what the studies say about silk, skin and hair.

Mulberry silk, satin, momme: how to read a silk pillowcase label

These are general rules for any silk pillowcase, not the specs of ours.

Silk or satin. In the EU, “silk” is a protected fiber name: Regulation 1007/2011 reserves it for fiber from silk-secreting insects and bars its use for any other fiber, even as an adjective. The word “satin” doesn’t appear in it once. Satin is a weave, and it can be silk, polyester or viscose: a “silk satin” pillowcase is silk, while a “satin pillowcase” with no fiber content listed says nothing about its fiber. See how to recognize real silk.

Mulberry silk. “Mulberry” names the species, Bombyx mori, not a guarantee of what the worm ate. The mulberry filament is much finer than wild tussah silk (10–24 µm across, versus 50–70 µm): smoother and more even, not stronger. The full definition: what mulberry silk is.

Momme. It measures weight, not quality. No standard sets a momme for a pillowcase, and two silks at the same weight can still differ, depending on how the sericin, the natural gum around the fiber, was removed. A stated momme can be checked on a kitchen scale. What momme measures, and what it doesn’t.

Grade 6A and OEKO-TEX. “Grade 6A” is a trade term that can’t be checked on a finished pillowcase. OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certifies that a textile was tested for harmful substances, not what fiber it’s made of.

Size and care: what to check

Size. Measure your pillow flat, edge to edge. Silk doesn’t spring back once stretched, so a case that’s too tight stays marked at the corners: between two sizes, size up. Our pillowcase size guide matches each French pillow size to its case.

Care. A silk pillowcase can be washed at home, by hand or on a delicate cycle in a mesh bag. Wet silk loses up to 20% of its strength, so don’t wring it: press it in a towel and dry it flat, in the shade. Keep the water at 86 °F (30 °C) at most, use an enzyme-free detergent, skip fabric softener and never tumble dry. Step by step: how to wash a silk pillowcase.

The size and care instructions for ours will be posted here on release day.

Frequently asked questions

Are silk pillowcases worth it?

For how they feel, yes; as a treatment, no. Silk glides instead of catching and soaks up less night cream than cotton. Any effect on morning creases or frizz is modest and takes a few weeks to judge.

What’s the downside of a silk pillowcase?

Cost and care. It costs more than cotton and is weaker wet, so it needs gentle washing. Stretched, it doesn’t spring back. Light yellows and weakens it, it’s prone to static, and benzoyl peroxide, found in many acne treatments, leaves permanent pale marks on dyed silk and attacks the fiber.

Silk vs. satin pillowcase: which is better for hair?

For friction alone, both help: a smooth satin catches hair less than cotton, and a polyester satin does part of the job for less. Satin is a weave, not a fiber, so only the fiber content tells you which one you have. Where silk differs is moisture: it takes up about 11% of its weight without feeling damp, compared with about 0.4% for polyester.

Is a silk pillowcase good for curly hair?

Curly and textured hair is among the most sensitive to friction, so a smoother surface can mean less frizz by morning. Dermatology literature on afro-textured hair recommends silk pillowcases and silk scarves at night, based on reviews and practice guides rather than a trial. The pillowcase protects hair left loose, the scarf hair that’s tied up.

Does a silk pillowcase help with wrinkles?

We found no study showing that it does. Sleep lines come from compression and shear against the pillow (Aesthetic Surgery Journal, 2016). A smooth pillowcase reduces the shear, not the compression; sleeping on your back is what reduces compression.

What’s the difference between mulberry silk and 100% silk?

“100% silk” names the fiber; “mulberry” names the species, Bombyx mori. Under EU rules, the fiber content must use the name “silk”; “mulberry” is extra detail some sellers add. Neither tells you the weight.

What does momme mean on a silk pillowcase?

Momme is a weight: 1 momme is about 4.34 g/m². No standard sets an ideal momme for a pillowcase, and a higher momme means a heavier fabric, not a softer one. The momme of ours will be listed here.

Zipper or envelope closure?

A zipper keeps the pillow in place, though you may feel it under your head; protect it in a mesh bag when washing. An envelope closure tucks the pillow behind an inner flap, with no metal. Ours will be listed here.

Which size do I need: Standard, Queen or King?

Measure your pillow flat and match it. US pillowcases come in Standard (20 × 26 in), Queen (20 × 30 in) and King (20 × 36 in). French pillows are mostly 65 × 65 cm or 50 × 70 cm, and no US size fits them exactly. The size of ours isn’t set yet.

When is it coming out, and how much will it be?

We won’t give a date or a price until they’re settled. Leave your email at the top of this page and we’ll write to you on release day.

And for your eyes: the silk sleep mask

Our silk sleep mask is available now. It puts silk on the thinnest skin of your face, around the eyes, and does what a pillowcase can’t: it blocks out light, at home or away.
