What is mulberry silk?

Mulberry Silk: Origin and Characteristics

Mulberry silk is produced by the Bombyx mori silkworm, fed exclusively on white mulberry leaves. It is this controlled diet that gives silk its exceptional properties: a long, regular thread of incomparable fineness and luster.

Unlike other types of silk produced from less controlled feeding of silkworms, mulberry silk is considered the purest and highest quality. It accounts for the vast majority of high-end silk production worldwide.

Why is Mulberry Silk Different?

Mulberry silk stands out due to several characteristics:

  • An exceptionally smooth feel: its long, regular fibers create a soft surface, without rough spots
  • A natural sheen: the triangular structure of the fiber reflects light uniformly
  • Remarkable lightness: despite its strength, mulberry silk remains light and pleasant to wear
  • Gentle on the skin: it helps limit friction, making it particularly suitable for accessories in direct contact with the skin

Mulberry Silk and Momme

The quality of silk is notably measured in momme (mm), a unit that indicates the density of the fabric. The higher the momme, the denser, more stable, and more durable the silk.

Light silk (6 to 12 momme) is translucent and delicate. 22 momme silk, like that used in the Maison Noctya mask, offers a richer feel, better drape, and an impression of noble material perceptible from the first touch.

Why Maison Noctya Chose Mulberry Silk

The Maison Noctya sleep mask is designed with 22 momme mulberry silk for a simple reason: it is the material that offers the best balance between softness, drape, and a sensation of quality in contact with the skin.

A sleep mask is an intimate object, worn every evening, in direct contact with the face. It deserves a material worthy of this moment.
